Plants in May

It’s been more than a week that we are back home and for my surprise tomato plants did wait for me and had grown so big that I had to get rid of some 6 or 7 plants to give space to others. Of course part of other more sensitive plants like broccoli and few summer flowers that I replanted too soon just before leaving for Latvia didn’t survive. It’s good time to saw more seeds now, but the weather is so boringly depressive in Iceland right now that I’m in no mood to do anything, and I don’t even follow much what’s happening with summer flowers and peas that are trying to survive out on balcony, but I guess they’re doing fine since the frosts are over.

Here are pictures from how it looks inside now.

”Garden” update – April

Just before leaving Iceland I managed to take pictures of almost everything worth picturing in my small apartment garden. I’m away for 2 and a half weeks and meanwhile my sister in law is trying to keep those plants alive. I’m easy though if something doesn’t survive my absence. I put everything in one place to ease the work of watering for her, at the same time I realize plants do need more space than this. When I come back I’ll put part of them out on balcony, so tomatoes indoors should get some air then. Let´s just hope they wait for me.

    Shy beginnings

While there’s still a view like this from our balcony…

    Mountains

… some sowing and seedling-watching is going on indoors. I’m not really sure what I’m doing but I surely enjoy it a lot. It’s so exciting and fascinating to watch seeds turning into plants. Here’s some progress:

    Five cucumber seedlings…

    Cucumbers sprouting

… are growing huge, and I’m quite sure they’ll need even bigger pots and space for each of them. Little sprouts seen next to cucumbers are radishes.

    Cucumbers and some sprouting radishes

Here’s one of 3 batches of tomato plants:

Little hibiscus sprout trapped in its seed coat:

I used some ninja tactics and helped hibiscus to get rid of seed coat to let him grow on:

    Hibiscus free

And grow it does and I’ll cherish it because it’s the only one that came out of 7 seeds.

    Hibiscus

First eggplant seedlings appear just now:

And here’s just the only real fail so far – herb mix. I have no idea what exactly there is but it’s not growing well:

    Spice mix

I also have some paprika seedlings appearing these days, and then there are some onions I planted and quite a lot of summer flowers and broccoli I sowed that are not showing yet, so just mentioning.

I thought it would be fun to let Sandra ”help” me with sowing and all the other gardening work this year, but we didn’t get far to start with. She helped though to fill some pots. That is before she realized it was great fun to throw mold up in the air and make a mold rain in living room. Oh, no no.

But I’m really looking forward on gardening this year. There will be some stress and fear around the end of April when I’m leaving for Latvia for 2 weeks and I’ve yet to get someone to come and water my plants, but in a worst case I’ve saved some seeds for sowing only after I come back, so even if things go wrong with existing plants, I’ll still have chance to make some fruits this summer.

    New balcony

I realized that I never put any progress pictures of last summer’s biggest thing – fixing our balcony. When I just searched for some pictures I remembered all the noise and dust and trouble and men walking with their dusty shoes in our apartment and all that hell that I had already forgotten about but it sure was no fun living with it for almost a half year and having small kids around. Here is some of it in pictures.

Balcony after high-pressure wash when all the loose old paint came off like some autumn leaves:

    Balcony after high-pressure wash

High-pressure wash of course made some mini flooding:

    Some flooding

Then a guy who was breaking down even more paint and cement from balcony ceiling with a terribly noisy weapon crashed some of the stuff in a window in girls bedroom. No worries – nobody got hurt and all the windows were about to be changed anyway:

    Broken glass

    Some more dust and crap:

    Dust and crap

I don’t have a good picture of already finished new balcony with red colored pieces instead of old ugly blue. Right now it would be pointless to go out and take a picture because balcony is dirty with ash that was brought up from inlands with the latest storm and will probably bother me for some time… yeah, I’m talking about the volcanic ash that people in world have forgotten about, we here still live with it. But I made a nice picture during recent snowstorm that changed our balcony on 5th floor into cute Christmas land… that’s our Christmas tree, doing fine in its pot:

    Snowy new balcony

Last Saturday I did some clean-up on balcony and was happy to dig a shovel in a compost bin that I started 1,5 years ago, all winters food scraps was mixed with papers, old plants and some mold and today it looks like this – nicely dark and fairly clear:

    Compost mold

We’ve done composting also this winter and when spring is almost here I needed to build new compost container where I move all the nasty food scraps nicely mixed together with papers and mold and leaves, it will not smell and will turn into mold in a year or so. I put it away and let it be:

    New compost bin

And the last picture – something beautiful and promising – full of seeds to start soon and I hope some of it when it grows will look great on our new balcony:

    A little something awoke

    First garlic sprout 2013

At the end of November last year I bought some organic garlic in store and planted them in 2 pots thinking that it wouldn’t end well. I put one of the pots outside on balcony right away but kept the other one inside. The one inside gave few white ugly sprouts weeks later and I thought it was no point in having them in and want them to grow through the darkness of Icelandic winter, so out it went too for a winter sleep. I peeked outside today and was so happy to see things happening. Yay.

    Butterfly costume

It was Ash Wednesday last week and children had to wear costumes in kindergartens and schools. I knew right away I wanted to make something myself for Sandra and started by googling and browsing pinterest for some ideas. Butterfly it was, but I finished it only last night, week later… oh well…

    Butterfly baby

This time I really wish I had gone to shop and bought fabrics in colors that fit better together. On the other hand I’m glad for reducing the amount of my stored fabrics once again. So it is what it is.

I would like to show some pictures on how I made this thing.

To start with I shaped 2 pieces of wires for the wings. Ugla is crazy about wires and loves chasing those. After all it’s her to blame for ruining already existing butterfly wings that someone gave Sandra as a present. But that way I got the necessary wires for my butterfly costume.

    1 - Ugla and wires

As I see on internet all butterfly costumes have some spots on wings and it looks better than plane one color wings. Here I try to design some spots… pretty unprofessional.

    2 - Designing wings

Choosing fabric for spots was a real problem, but this is the one I chose after all – some old cut-off from the previous century.

3 - Old piece of cloth

Here are wings with fabric spots before sewing.

    4 - Spots

Then I began stitching fabrics around wires and adding a tulle edge.

    5 - Tulle edge

    Working on the second wing.

    6 - The other wing

I put some time in thinking out how I’m gonna fasten those wings to a body, and came up with making such base with bands to which I later stitched the wings at.

    7 - Making a base

Here I put a cardboard in it to make the whole thing strong enough to hold wings so that they wouldn’t hang down.

    8 - Cardboard in base

For butterfly antennas I used an already existing hair circle or whatever it’s called and cocktail straws.

9 - Hair thingy and cocktail straws

The rest of the old fabrics was cut in irregular pieces and randomly put on skirt that I had already sewn, but not pictured. In this picture you see already made antennas and that the working table has turned into a big mess. It has been a week of work.

10 - Antennas and the rest of old fabrics

Butterfly costume is of course made for Sandra, who is almost twice taller than Telma, but I asked Telma to pose firstly because Sandra is not at home at this moment. Secondly because Sandra got to try some pieces of costume while it was still in process and not ready, just to help me… sometimes I had to beg her to try it on and after all as it happens she got enough of it and didn’t want to see it, I think now when I’m finished it I’d better put it in the box and away from her eyes. And then one day I’ll take it out and I know that she’ll be excited then again. But I can’t stop smiling at little Telma that could hardly walk with all this stuff on her, really cute.

    Scarf from granny

I’m such a bad knitter that when I need something fast I rather order it from my mom, even if it’s something little and have to travel far from Latvia. A scarf for Sandra arrived the other day.

    Simple dress and leggings

After a long long time I’ve been finally feeling itchy to create something. I had a thought of simple dress for Sandra for a while now, because one of her very much used daily dresses suddenly became too short and we needed something to replace it. Something like this.

    Dress and leggings

As much as I wanted to drive and buy some new cool bright and colorful fabrics I forced myself to go over those tons of boring stuff I keep in countless bags that are always making a mess in apartment. And I guess I had a good day, managed to find some bits that went well together in my opinion. I used a gray sweater for the dress, a bright red blouse for bias and leggings, and a cat for erm… cat! from shirt that I didn’t fit in anymore. I add some pictures of a process.

In search for the Northern lights

Almost a year later we joined Siggi’s friends again to go for a summerhouse weekend. This time I hesitated because going with 2 little kids instead of just one is not the same thing and I was afraid that it would make more trouble than fun. But there was a good prognosis for Northern lights on a brand new Aurora forecast section in Icelandic Weather station’s homepage, and it’s been such a long long time since I saw the miracle last time. So I took the risk and agreed for the trip.

I got more Northern lights than I hoped and much more than I’ve ever seen before, and Siggi managed to capture some of it.

The rest of the trip was… well… trouble.

    Doll

After a long time in no use my sewing machine got a work yesterday. This is what came out, a little misproportional doll for a little girl I went to see today for the first time. Hopefully the seventh or eight doll I make will look something neater.
